Thrust bearings serve the critical function of supporting axial loads in mechanical systems. Comprising a cage that securely houses the balls, these bearings sit between two washers, which may be either flat or grooved. Below, we'll explore the intricacies of miniature thrust bearings featuring grooved washers.
Miniature thrust ball bearings with grooved washers for shaft sizes from 3mm to 10mm
These precision-engineered one-way thrust bearings feature a distinct groove or raceway in each thrust bearing washer, unlike flat washers. It's important to note that they are specifically designed to handle axial loads only and are not suitable for supporting radial loads. Their design focuses on accommodating thrust loads in a singular direction.
In this configuration, one washer boasts an internal diameter that is 0.2mm larger, facilitating clearance for the shaft and ensuring proper placement within the housing. Conversely, the other washer is machined with an outer diameter 0.2mm smaller, allowing it to clear the housing and securely locate onto the shaft. This design ensures optimal performance and efficient operation in diverse mechanical systems.
Washer and ball material
The washers and balls in these thrust bearings are made from chrome steel, known for its exceptional load-bearing capacity. Notably, thrust bearings with raceways in the washers can handle heavier loads and higher speeds compared to those with flat washers. In addition, when it comes to brand distinctions, we are distributors of EZO brand single-direction thrust bearings. These come equipped with an AISI-304 stainless steel cage, prioritising durability and corrosion resistance. On the other hand, SMB versions typically feature a brass cage, offering robust support and reliability in various operating conditions.
The range of thrust bearings is readily available from our UK stock.
Temperature restrictions
Chrome steel thrust bearings are are capable of withstanding temperatures of up to 120 degrees Celsius continuously or up to 150 degrees Celsius intermittently. However, chrome steel has a reduced load capacity above these temperatures. To operate at these temperatures, the bearings require the right lubricant.
It's essential to note the limitations of these bearings. They are not suitable for use in corrosive environments due to the inherent susceptibility of chrome steel washers and balls to corrosion. Our thrust bearings are coated with a protective layer of preservative oil, safeguarding against corrosion and ensuring prolonged durability.
Specialised applications
These bearings find application in a wide array of specialised industries and environments. From precision instrumentation to high-speed machinery, their ability to handle axial loads with precision makes them indispensable in critical systems. Whether it's in aerospace navigation systems, medical imaging equipment or industrial automation, miniature thrust bearings play a vital role in ensuring smooth operation and reliability.
Thrust bearing lubrication
At SMB Bearings, we operate an in-house relubrication facility dedicated to cleaning and re-lubricating bearings from our inventory and customer-supplied bearings. We can provide our thrust bearings with customer specified oils, greases or dry lubricants.

For further technical insights, simply click on INFO in the rows below to access comprehensive technical drawings of the bearings, complete with detailed load and speed data. It's worth mentioning that while theoretical life calculations are based on maximum loads and speeds, it is advisable to operate bearings at levels significantly below these ratings to optimise bearing longevity and performance over time.
